Pointer Board: Nonverbal AAC is a simple visual communication tool designed to help non-verbal children and adults express what they want.
Originally built for our own non-verbal son, this app provides an easy pointer board style communication system using images and spoken phrases.
Many AAC apps are complex or overwhelming. Pointer Board focuses on simplicity, speed, and clarity so communication can happen quickly.
How It Works
The app uses a simple 3-screen visual communication flow.
1️⃣ Add Places or Brands
Create entries for places such as:
Burger restaurants
Coffee shops
Fast food chains
Cafés
Any location your child visits
These become large, easy-to-tap buttons.
2️⃣ Add Items with Images
For each place, add images of items such as:
Burgers
Fries
Milkshakes
Coffee
Snacks
Meals
Each image is given a name that the app will speak.
3️⃣ Tap to Speak
When an image is tapped:
The app opens the item full screen and says:
“I want … [item name]”
This allows a non-verbal user to point to the screen and communicate clearly.
Why We Made This
Our son is non-verbal and we needed a simple digital pointer board for everyday situations like ordering food.
Instead of complicated AAC systems, we wanted something:
Fast

Easy for caregivers to set up
So we built this app for our family — and decided to share it freely for other families who might find it helpful.
