About this app

The new tagesschau app delivers the most important and up-to-the-minute news of the day – directly to your smartphone or tablet!

In Story mode, you can intuitively swipe through today's top headlines – from Germany and around the world – for a quick news overview. You can access individual articles by swiping up.

In the completely redesigned tagesschau app, you can navigate between different sections using the tab bar. You can always access the top section by tapping the tagesschau icon in the bottom left corner. To the right of that, you'll find the new section where all editorial content can be sorted by category.

In the new "For Me" section, we offer personalized news. For example, you can select the German states* that are of particular interest to you from the content of the ARD (Das Erste: BR, hr, mdr, NDR, radiobremen, rbb, SR, SWR, WDR). Personalization is anonymous; your personal data is not stored.

For the first time, the app also includes content from the fact-checking team. Other sections include News, Domestic, Foreign, Investigative, Business (with Stock Market), Knowledge, Sports, Video, and Weather. The app features current news from ARD and Sportschau, drawing on ARD's global network of correspondents.

In the new tagesschau app, users can now indicate the emotion each article evokes in them. They can then see how other users have voted on the same article, creating up-to-date user sentiment indicators for each article.

Behind the video icon in the navigation bar of the new tagesschau app, you'll now find the best content from tagesschau's social media team. You'll also find live streams of current programs and videos of past broadcasts, including tagesschau (also with sign language interpretation), tagesthemen, tagesschau in Easy Language, and tagesschau24. For your quick news update on the go, the tried-and-tested "tagesschau in 100 Seconds" is perfect!

Behind the headphone icon in the navigation bar, you have access to all audio content from the tagesschau editorial team. You can either listen to the most important topics from the editorial team in a constantly updated playlist, or explore the tagesschau podcast offerings.

Optionally, receive all breaking news alerts from the tagesschau editorial team via push notification on your device – find out live when something important happens! Premium push notifications keep you informed about other important content from the tagesschau editorial team. And if something might be particularly relevant to you, you can also receive personalized push notifications based on your usage habits.

The new tagesschau app lets you switch between light and dark mode and adjust the font size to your liking. You can also choose which home screen the app starts on in the settings.

The tagesschau app and its content are free. For accessing the live stream and videos from mobile networks, we recommend a flat-rate data plan, as otherwise higher connection costs may apply.

Ratings and reviews

The Dec 2025 update ruins the app. 1) It's focused on video not text. Why? Text articles can be read at leisure, a video can't. 2) It's no longer possible to select text and send it to a translator app. This is vital for the non-Muttersprachler like me. 3) In the few text articles, the font is harder to read. The message: if you're not a native German, it's not for you, if your eyesight isn't great, it's not for you, if you don't want to listen to videos, it's not for you.

it is much slower than before, even if video is disabled. after entering an article, when going to the next page, sometimes (often actually) the title is missing and one only sees a nothing saying image. The font size, even at font size large, is much smaller than before. This version wasn't really thoroughly tested. sad.

Lots of duplicate news with no proper grouping by topic, constant spelling and grammar errors, way more videos instead of articles, videos auto play and even stick around when trying to go back while the "close" button doesn't work until the video started. Overall the new version has terrible UX. What the heck happened?
