About this app

GT SignApp is a field data collection tool built by the Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, for a research study on roadway sign condition and inventory.

The app is not a general-purpose product. It is listed publicly on Google Play, but it works only with an account issued by the Georgia Tech research team to authorized field staff and researchers; there is no public sign-up.

WHAT IT DOES

Authorized users capture video of roadway environments while driving a planned route. Each recording is paired with a GPS track logged throughout the recording, so every frame can be located along the route during later analysis. Recordings stay on the device until the user chooses to upload them; they are then compressed and transferred to a Georgia Tech research server.

FEATURES

- Landscape, full-screen camera capture at a fixed frame rate, with no audio recorded
- A GPS track logged alongside each recording
- Automatic segmentation of long recordings so a single session is never lost to one oversized file
- A recordings list showing what has been captured, its size, and its upload state
- Uploads you start keep running if you switch to another app, with a progress notification and per-item retry
- Storage checks before each upload so a transfer is not started without room to prepare it
- Links to the privacy policy and to a data deletion request inside the app

DATA COLLECTED

The app records video and precise location and sends both, together with the user's account identity, to Georgia Tech's research servers. It records no audio. It contains no advertising and no analytics or crash-reporting service. Collected data is used only for the research study.

Recording stops as soon as you leave the app: nothing is recorded and no location is logged while the app is off screen, and the app has no background location permission.

REQUIREMENTS

- An account issued by the Georgia Tech research team
- Camera and precise location permissions
- Android 7.0 or later
- Substantial free storage, since video is kept on the device until uploaded

The app is used only within a Georgia Tech research study. The privacy policy linked on this page describes exactly what is stored, where it goes, how long it is kept, and how to ask for it to be deleted.

What’s new

First release. GT SignApp records geolocated dashcam video for a Georgia Tech study of roadway sign
inventory. Study participants sign in with an account issued by the research team, record a drive,
and upload the recording to a Georgia Tech server for processing.
