CAMBER – Crowdsourced Pavement Intelligence
CAMBER is a mobile data collection tool for monitoring road and cycling infrastructure conditions. Designed for researchers, municipal authorities, and citizen contributors, it captures geo-referenced pavement data using your phone's built-in sensors.
HOW IT WORKS
• Start a recording session and mount your phone on your bike or vehicle
• The app simultaneously records video, GPS location, and accelerometer data
• Routes are tracked in real time on an interactive map
• Stop recording when you're done — sessions last up to 15 minutes each
KEY FEATURES
• Video recording of road surfaces with automatic compression
• Continuous GPS tracking to geo-reference every segment of your route
• Accelerometer data capture to detect bumps, potholes, and surface irregularities
• Live speed and distance display during recording
• Camera angle guide to ensure optimal capture angle
• Interactive map view with route visualization
• Incident reporting with photos and GPS coordinates
• Automatic background upload of completed recordings
• Safe mode for distraction-free recording
• Satellite and standard map views
DATA & PRIVACY
• All data collection is user-initiated — you control when recording starts and stops
• Location sharing can be toggled on or off in settings
• Video footage captured in public environments may incidentally include faces or licence plates — these are not collected for identification and may be anonymised during processing
• Data is securely uploaded and used solely for infrastructure condition analysis and research
• All processing complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
• You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app
WHO IS IT FOR
• Researchers studying pavement deterioration and road quality
• Municipal agencies monitoring cycling and road infrastructure
• Citizens who want to contribute to better roads in their community
CAMBER is developed as part of a research project focused on intelligent infrastructure monitoring. Your contributions help build better, safer roads for everyone.
