Wise World (Beginner) lets you check, through 100 four-choice quizzes, the everyday knowledge that quietly decides how a day goes. Why you wash your hands before eating and after using the toilet. How much change comes back when you pay 7 coins out of the 10 you are carrying. You never just pick an answer and move on: the reason behind it is there to read. It is the gentlest of the three volumes in the series.

• Wise World 2 (Basic): easy, covering a wider range of everyday topics

■ Designed so you read the explanation through
In this volume the explanation that follows each answer is the main event. The safe-water question, for example, goes on to say that river and well water can look perfectly clear and still carry germs and viruses too small to see, and that a rolling boil is what kills them. Reading an explanation to the end earns experience points and levels you up. Wrong answers earn points too, so reading it through matters more than guessing right.
