About this app

Clip a recipe from any website or a photo of a cookbook page, cook it step by step with timers, and shop from an aisle-sorted list. Every recipe is a plain-text file you own, so nothing you save can ever be locked in.

RECIPES THAT KEEP THEIR STRUCTURE
Most recipe apps flatten a recipe into a list and a wall of text. Cook is a recipe manager built on Cooklang, an open-source plain-text format that keeps how a recipe really works:
- Sections: dough, filling, and frosting stay distinct parts of one recipe
- Recipe references: your pizza links to your pizza dough instead of copying it
- Notes and metadata: oven temps, timing cues, source, tags. Nothing gets lost
- Scaling: by servings, by multiplier, or around a single ingredient

GET RECIPES IN WITHOUT RETYPING
- Paste a link, or share a page from Chrome, and Cook turns it into a clean recipe. Recipe-site imports are free and unlimited.
- Photograph a cookbook page or share screenshots and Cook reads the ingredients and steps (Cook Cloud plan).
- Save recipes from YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram videos (Cook Cloud plan).

COOK FROM YOUR PHONE
- Cooking mode: a mise-en-place checklist, then one large-text step at a time. The screen stays awake.
- Cooking timers from any step that ring even when the phone is locked.

SHOPPING LISTS THAT MATCH HOW YOU SHOP
Add any recipe, scaled amounts included, and Cook builds one shopping list. View it by aisle or by recipe, define your own aisles in a text file, check things off, and send the list to whoever is shopping.

YOUR RECIPES, YOUR FILES
Recipes live in a folder as .cook text files. Keep them on this device, point the app at any folder you already sync with Google Drive, Dropbox, Syncthing, or Nextcloud, or use Cook Cloud to sync with your other phones and the desktop editor. Works offline. Open them in any text editor, back them up, move them anywhere, forever. A recipe organizer with no database and no lock-in.

FREE APP, OPTIONAL COOK CLOUD
The app is free. Cooklang, its parsers, and the desktop Cook Editor (Windows, Mac, Linux) are open source. Cook Cloud subscriptions pay for the servers and the AI:
- Cook Basic: sync across devices, photo and video imports
- Cook Pro: larger import allowances, plus CookBot, the meal-planning AI in the Cook Editor that drafts your week from your own recipes
Subscriptions auto-renew until canceled and can be managed in Google Play.

very good app, you can use it just on your phone. Save your recipes forever, combine them into shopping list, and it looks like they'll soon add a feature where you browse by grocery aisle. For long term use: Start by finding a recipe. I convert the recipe using cooklangs recipe importer on the web (🔎🌐). I put that recipe in obsidian, I recommend adding the cooklang extension to obsidian as well. Then with this app I point it at my obsidian folder on my phone and it pulls all my recipes.

I like that you don't have to have an account anywhere in order to use this app. I just have my plain text .cook files sitting in a folder and can read them step by step for cooking. Brilliant.

What’s new

• Links to your recipes: cook:// and cook.md/my/… links open in the app. Long-press a recipe or folder to copy its link.
• Open .cook files from Files, mail or your cloud drive.
• Shopping list: no more double-counting when recipes reference each other, and scaling now applies to sub-recipes too.
• Recipes in a non-UTF-8 encoding show up in your library again.
• Clearer messages when a linked folder disappears or a recipe was deleted elsewhere.
• Fixed a launch crash on some Android 10 devices.
