LocalType is an Android keyboard with voice typing built in. The recognition happens on your phone itself, so your voice does not go anywhere.
WHY IT IS DIFFERENT
Most voice typing sends your audio over the internet to a transcription service. LocalType does not need to. The speech model sits on your phone and does the work there.
LocalType: your voice > your phone > text
Other apps: your voice > the internet > a service > text
That also means it keeps working with no signal at all. On a plane, in the metro, in a basement.
Because your phone does the work itself, recognition takes a few seconds instead of being instant. That is the trade you make for keeping your voice off other people's servers.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Add LocalType as a keyboard in your Android settings.
2. Tap the microphone in the bar above the keys, in any app.
3. Speak, then pause. Your text appears in the field you were typing in.
It is a full keyboard as well: typing, autocorrect, word suggestions, gesture typing, emoji and dictionaries for eighteen languages. Not a separate app you have to switch to and back from.
LANGUAGES
Type and dictate in English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, French, Polish, Catalan, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Turkish and Indonesian.
SPEECH MODELS
Pick the model that suits your phone: Compact (60 MB), Standard (190 MB) or Large (539 MB). The app measures your device and recommends one, so you do not have to guess. You download it once. After that you never need a connection to dictate again.
PRIVACY
No account. No sign-up. No ads. No tracking. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing for anyone to look at. The app uses the network for exactly one thing: downloading the speech model you chose.
WHAT IT COSTS
Try everything free for 14 days. After that, dictation requires a yearly payment. Typing stays free forever, so the keyboard itself never stops working.
REQUIREMENTS
Android 8.0 or newer, on a 64-bit device. Around 200 MB of free space for the Standard model. Phones with 3 GB of RAM or more are recommended.
