About this app

The free micro:bit CreateAI app works with a BBC micro:bit, allowing students to explore how AI works. Train machine learning models from your own movement data, then create programs to use on your micro:bit anywhere! You will need a BBC micro:bit to use with the app.

Designed for use in the classroom, students can use a micro:bit and CreateAI to develop their own AI-powered piece of tech from scratch in a single lesson:

1. Collect data samples of movements like running, walking, dancing or jumping
2. Train machine learning models to recognise those movements
3. Test and improve the models for accuracy
4. Program a micro:bit in MakeCode to recognise and respond to your movements.

Not sure where to start? Free lessons and projects are available in the app.

What do you need to use micro:bit CreateAI?
You will need:

• A least one BBC micro:bit
• 2 x AAA batteries and a battery pack
• Tablet with this app downloaded
• Bluetooth enabled
• (ideally) micro:bit wearable or another way to attach a micro:bit and battery pack to your wrist, ankle or another object
• Some experience or familiarity of using the micro:bit is recommended
• Some experience using the Microsoft MakeCode editor is recommended, if you’d like to go on to code the micro:bit

What can students learn about AI with the micro:bit and micro:bit CreateAI?
Students can experience how the data they collect affects the machine learning model, and make decisions based on their experiences. They learn:

• Data literacy - how data is used and analysed in AI
• AI literacy (including the human role in AI) - what AI systems are and how human decisions have an impact
• Computational thinking - breaking down complex processes and using those skills to think creatively

Does it cost anything?
micro:bit CreateAI is a completely free tool with no logins or passwords required, like all of Micro:bit Educational Foundation’s tools and resources.

You will need a BBC micro:bit to use the app. The micro:bits can be purchased through local vendors, and in some areas can be borrowed through local lending schemes.

The Micro:bit Educational Foundation is a non-profit organisation with the aim of inspiring every child to create their best digital future.
