About this app

PRONTO makes buying fares for MTS and NCTD easier than ever. Add money to your PRONTO app, then scan your phone at the validator each trip you make. Our pay-as-you-go function means you always get the best fare! When using the app, hold your phone 5 to 6 inches below the validator to scan your barcode.

The PRONTO app can also help you plan trips, see real-time arrivals, get service statuses, save favorite stations, and find stops for San Diego County area transit so you can plan your trip around San Diego without any problems.

Always Get The Best Fare
With PRONTO, you can pay-as-you-go* by adding money to your PRONTO account with a credit or debit card. Every time you scan your app, the appropriate one-way fare is deducted from your balance. Look for validators at Trolley, SPRINTER and COASTER stations, and onboard buses.

You will never be charged more than a Day Pass ($6 Adult or $3 Reduced Fare) in a given calendar day, regardless of how many trips you make. Likewise, you will never be charged more than a Month Pass ($72 Adult or $23 Reduced Fare) regardless of the number of trips in a calendar month.

You can track your progress toward a Day or Month Pass in the PRONTO app.

*Pay-as-you go features not available for COASTER (must prepay for Day or Month Pass).

I had $11 in my balance and an unactivated day pass on my account. When I went to pay for a $2.50 tram ticket at the very end of the day, it activated my day pass worth $15 dollars instead, wasting a full day's worth of trips on trains and trams. No refund, I assumed it would use my balance instead of activating because what is the point of a 1 year expiration if you can't use the balance before activating? They need to make it clearer and offer options, as well as offer refunds for this.

Physical card stores money forever. You don't need a monthly pass if you don't ride public transport regularly. Use it whenever you actually need it without thinking about 'time' on a pass. Also, have a virtual card on your phone(s) with a different balance, use them interchangeably. Track balances on the same page. Refill for any amount as low as $5. When you prove you're senior, your card is good until 2080, fares unchanged. Easily replace lost cards or transfer balances. Nice phone helpers.

Amazing. Buying passes is easy, and scanning is easy once you have tried one time. What negates that all for me is that it did not tell me that there would be no coaster service for an entire weekend. It let me plan a trip just as normal, but once I arrived to the station by bus, signs said that there would be no service for the entire two days. There were dozens of others waiting who were also unaware. The app is useless if I have to interrogate the website every time I buy a pass.
