About this app

For more than a thousand years, astrologers from Baghdad to Cordoba read the sky with a rigor that almost no modern app attempts. Canopy brings that tradition to your phone: Ancient Arabian Astrology, calculated properly and kept as a calm daily practice, not a daily prediction. No horoscope hype, no vague affirmations — the sky, the sources, and what the tradition actually says about the moment you are standing in.

YOUR DAY, HOUR BY HOUR
Open Canopy in the morning and two things come first: which of the planetary hours (sāʿāt al-kawākib) is ruling right now, and which lunar mansion (manzil) the Moon has entered. These are not ornaments but the working instruments of a tradition codified by al-Bīrūnī in the eleventh century. Planetary hours run in the Chaldean order — Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars — cycling through the twelve unequal hours of day and the twelve of night, each with its own counsel. You get the full day and night schedule, the day lord and hour lord, the Moon's condition (void of course, via combusta, afflictions), and what the classical sources hold fit or unfit for the hour.

YOUR BIRTH CHART, IN THE CLASSICAL METHOD
Your natal chart is cast with traditional technique, not modern shorthand: whole-sign houses, the seven visible planets, essential and accidental dignity, sect, temperament, twelfth-parts, the lunar nodes, and the Arabic Lots (sihām) — Fortune, Spirit, and the rest. The Thema Mundi sits alongside it as the tradition's reference chart. Every placement opens into a reading of its own, written for your chart, not pasted from a sun-sign template.

ELECTIONAL TIMING (AL-IKHTIYĀRĀT)
Court astrologers were asked one question more than any other: when should this be done? Al-ikhtiyārāt — electional astrology, unbroken since the ninth century — answers it. Canopy scans a date range for windows that suit your intention: a contract, a journey, a conversation, a beginning. Build the election yourself and set the conditions — require an angular planet, require the day lord and hour lord to agree, keep the Moon clear of the via combusta, exclude retrograde significators — or bring a time you already have in mind and see how it scores.

TALISMANIC TIMING
The fixed stars held a particular place in this tradition. Canopy watches for moments when a significant star rises or culminates, working from Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm (the Picatrix), the star catalog of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṣūfī — Kitāb ṣuwar al-kawākib al-thābita, the Book of the Images of the Fixed Stars — and other sources. Each planet and star carries the correspondences, sigils, magic squares, and angelic attributions the texts assign to it.

THE 28 LUNAR MANSIONS (MANĀZIL AL-QAMAR)
The manāzil al-qamar — the twenty-eight stations the Moon passes through in a month — form one of the oldest sky-watching systems in the Arabian world, older there than the zodiac. Canopy carries the full catalog with daily guidance, marking which mansions the sources count as saʿd (fortunate) and which call for caution.

FIXED STARS
Thirty-five stars of the classical catalog, each under its Arabic name — Regulus (Qalb al-Asad), Antares (Qalb al-ʿAqrab, the Heart of the Scorpion), Aldebaran (al-Dabarān), Algol (Raʾs al-Ghūl), Vega (al-Nasr al-Wāqiʿ), Spica (al-Simāk al-Aʿzal), Fomalhaut (Fam al-Ḥūt), Canopus (Suhayl), and more — measured against your natal chart and against today's sky. Fifteen of them are the Behenian stars of the talismanic tradition, marked as such.

TRANSITS
Watch the planets move through your natal houses in real time, with the aspect, the orb, and whether it is applying or separating. Canopy shows you not only what is happening overhead, but what the tradition makes of it for your chart.

Canopy is traditional astrology built on the Ancient Arabian corpus, and it shows its work: sources named, terms given in Arabic, calculations you can check. For the reader who wants the old material and the precision to trust it.

The "no basis whatsoever" is Sahl ibn Bishr, Abū Maʿshar and al-Bīrūnī. The "horrible nomenclature" is Sa'd al-Su'ūd, Qalb al-'Aqrab, the 28 manāzil — a thousand years of Arabic names. The app was a year of work by one Arab-American developer; no AI. There's a free 7-day trial; we'd suggest using it.

Installed it, got really excited, got hit with "pay to use the app in literally any capacity", immediately got disgusted by the capitalist greed, and backed out. No thanks.

requires subscription AFTER getting you to give up all of your birth and location details and doesn't even let you try it at all. Bad faith.

The app requires your birth day+location in order to calculate your chart. Re: "doesn't even let you try it at all. Bad faith"; we offer a 7 a day free trial. There is also a big delete account (deletes all info) button before the trial, FYI. If you think you need more than 7 days to decide on the app, email us and we can give you a promo code.
