An incredible lack of available subtitles. There are many movies 10-15 years old, with subtitles in tens of languages, but Rakuten only has 5-6 of them. And, more than that, when you purchase a movie it does not warn you that your preferred language is not available, so there is a big waste of money.

Stole my money. I rented a video through their web page. The web page gave me only one way to watch the movie and that was through the app. Installed the app only to be told I couldn't rent the video through the app

Application fails when streaming a movie onto a Chromecast device, and restarts the movie on a different point each time. So far for 1 hour of movie it has been restarted 7 times. I tried on two different devices and same thing, and I use different applications with Chromecast and work perfectly. Very low performance.
