About this app

OpenProbe is an academic research project developed at UCL to study mobile network quality through crowdsourced measurements.

When you choose to contribute, OpenProbe takes a quick measurement of your network connection and sends it anonymously to a research mailbox. Your participation helps build a picture of how network performance varies across locations, times, and connection types.

WHAT OPENPROBE MEASURES
- Latency (TCP handshake time) to several public servers, including any custom targets you add
- Download bandwidth
- Network type (WiFi / Mobile)
- Approximate location, rounded to a ~100m grid on your device

PRIVACY FIRST
- A random anonymous identifier is generated on your device. It is never linked to your name, email, or phone number.
- Precise location is rounded on-device before anything is sent. Exact coordinates never leave your phone.
- All data is transmitted over an encrypted connection (TLS).
- Uploading is entirely optional. You can opt in or out at any time in Settings.
- You can view your full measurement history on the device and delete any record.

YOU ARE IN CONTROL
- Choose which servers to measure, including your own custom targets.
- Review every measurement before and after it is uploaded.
- Withdraw consent at any time, and request deletion of your contributed data using your anonymous ID.

OpenProbe is free, contains no advertisements, and does not require an account.
