Summary of major new engine work completed in this new version:

4 years after the original release of Spades Free, we are happy to announce our single greatest improvement in play quality, after a prolonged period devoted just to Spades. This has always been a collaborative project shared with York University and has combined the best of AI research with game industry engineering to achieve the best result so far. In this last period particular attention was paid to bidding and the Nil game, but we also made substantial progress in the Joker variants and efficiency of the analysis. We believe that the end product was worth it. Discover the updated play for yourself!

Overall, the gameplay is excellent. The lack of five stars is due to one's partner having no idea how to play when you (the only human playing) bids nil. I cannot count the number of times I have seen my partner lead with (or later play) a low card that leads to me winning a hand (which is not good while bidding nil) and, in a later hand, play a higher card which would have let my attempt at nil continue. Not saying it's easy to program, but it's extremely frustrating; a human wouldn't do that.

Thank you for your feedback. Analysis of years of beta reports show that AI player always has a valid reason for its decision and, while nil cover has been improved over the lifetime of the app, we appreciate that creating human-style play in card games and adapting to a variety of human play strategies is not easy so AI is still a work-in-progress

Disappointing after awhile. I like the user face, the range of settings and ads aren't always appearing after every round. BUT no matter what partner I choose, while they seemed to be great when playing against me, they suck when on my side right out of the gate, and never get to the level they were when against me, so it's the algorithms that are never in my favor.

We apologise for your disappointment however cpu players are designed to play with their partner, whether cpu or human. Please join our beta program via support@aifactory.co.uk to send direct reports of any suspected bad play to test. Almost all reports of bad play turn out to be good play but finding sub-optimal play can help us improve the app.

Nil becomes impossible with bad partner. It seems the AI prioritizes their bid over covering the partner's nil bid. Seems like it would be easy enough to tweak, but right now, it's almost unplayable. I just had a game where my partner played perfectly, but as soon as he picked up his third trick, he led out a 2 of clubs while having much higher cards in his hand. It caused me to lose my nil on a 4 of clubs. This happens so often that I don't think I'll play this anymore.

Thank you for your review. We have worked over the lifetime of the app to improve AI players, and analysis of years of beta reports show that AI player always has a valid reason for its decision, eg if 2 nil bids, partner may be trying to break opponent's nil. Creating human-style play in card games is difficult so AI is still a work-in-progress.
