LiDAR terrain shading, free: all of England, plus France, the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Czechia, Norway, Wallonia (Belgium), and Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony in Germany. Elsewhere you get the base map, satellite and search, but no LiDAR yet.

Shadowmark Maps shows the shape of the ground. LiDAR hillshade picks out banks, ditches, mounds, hollow ways and old field systems that are hard to see on the ground or in aerial photos: hillforts, barrows, Roman roads, deserted medieval villages and ridge and furrow.

It is made for landscape history and archaeology, and for metal detecting research: check what's on your permission before you go, and know where not to dig.

WHAT YOU GET FREE
• National LiDAR shading for the 12 regions above, including every corner of England
• Scheduled Monuments in England marked in red, with a warning when your GPS position is on or within 50 m of one, even with the red layer hidden
• Your GPS position on the map, and a compass with a heading-up mode
• Place search that works without a signal: places, rivers and postcode districts in Great Britain, towns and cities worldwide, OS grid references and coordinates
• A private finds log: photos, notes, position and OS grid reference for each find, kept only on your phone, with PDF and CSV export
• One offline area of up to 25 km² (a 5 × 5 km square) with LiDAR, base map and monument outlines, for fields with no signal (Norway's LiDAR stays online-only)
• An OpenStreetMap base map, or satellite imagery when you have a signal
• Hold to peek at the map under the LiDAR, and three 60-second Pro peeks a week

SHADOWMARK PRO
• Shade, Detail, Relief, Sky-view and Combined views for all of England and the United States (lower 48), computed from the Environment Agency's 1 m LiDAR terrain model and USGS 3DEP elevation (1 m where USGS has it). Small banks, ditches and pits stand out.
• 3D terrain
• A3 print export of the area around the map centre (England and the lower 48 US states)
• Unlimited offline areas, which also keep the Pro view you're using
Outside England and the US, Pro adds 3D terrain and unlimited offline areas to the free shading.

UK prices: £5.99 a month, £39.99 a year, or £119.99 once for lifetime Pro with no renewal. 7-day free trial for new subscribers on the annual plan; you're charged when the trial ends unless you cancel before then. Other countries see local prices on Google Play. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Cancel any time in Google Play › Profile › Payments and subscriptions › Subscriptions.

USE IT RESPONSIBLY
The app opens with the rules: get the landowner's permission, never detect or dig on a Scheduled Monument, report potential Treasure, and follow the Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting. Monument outlines are a guide, not a legal boundary, and they cover England only. No warning doesn't mean permission. LiDAR shows the shape of the ground, not what lies in it.

PRIVACY
