All the different card roles in Clash Royale

Cards are one of the most important parts of Clash Royale. Understanding the different roles that cards play is crucial to building effective decks and mastering the game. Each card role has a specific function that contributes to your overall strategy. There are eight cards in a deck; all these different card roles should be used to build a well-balanced deck.

Tanks are high-health units that soak up damage, protecting your weaker troops and structures. They are typically placed at the front of pushes to absorb hits while your other cards deal damage. They are essential for initiating pushes and drawing enemy fire away from more fragile units. Common tanks include Giant, Golem and P.E.K.K.A.

These cards are designed to deal significant damage to enemy troops or structures. They often have lower health, so they need protection from enemies. Examples include the musketeer, mini P.E.K.K.A. and electro wizard. Damage dealers can be split into two categories: single-target (like Mini P.E.K.K.A.) for a single hit and splash damage (like Baby Dragon) for dealing with multiple units​.

Support troops are versatile units that back up your main attackers, providing either additional damage, crowd control or buffs. They can be ranged, like the witch or wizard, or ground-based, like the knight. Their role is to amplify the effectiveness of your primary push or defend against swarms of enemies.

Swarm units consist of multiple low-health units that are deployed together to overwhelm the enemy or to distract powerful single-target attackers. You can use cards like skeleton army, minion horde and goblin gang as swarm units. They are effective for overpowering unprepared opponents or defending against single-target damage dealers​.

Buildings are stationary structures that either generate units (like Barbarian Hut) or serve a defensive purpose (like Cannon). They can distract your enemy troops, support your pushes or chip away at enemy health. Some buildings like the Inferno Tower specialise in taking down tanks, while others like Tesla offer versatile defensive options​.

Spells provide versatile options for dealing damage, controlling the battlefield or supporting your troops. They can be used for direct damage (like Fireball), crowd control (like Zap) or even enhancing your own units (like Rage). They are crucial for dealing with unexpected threats or securing a final push​.

Win conditions are cards or combinations of cards that are central to your strategy for destroying enemy towers. They are the primary threats in your deck, and all your strategy is typically built around them. Examples include Hog Rider, Royal Giant and Balloon. A good deck usually has a clear win condition supported by other roles​.

Control cards are used to manage the battlefield, either by pulling enemy units out of position or by shutting down specific strategies. They can turn the tide of a battle by neutralising or delaying threats​. These include cards like tornado for repositioning enemy troops or fisherman for pulling key units away from your towers.

Tower Troops are unique cards that are directly connected to your Princess Towers. When you deploy a Tower Troop, it effectively transforms your Princess Tower into a specialised unit for a certain amount of time, allowing it to attack more dynamically.

Cards like the cannoneer convert your Princess Tower into a cannon, focusing on heavy damage against ground troops, while the Tower Princess serves as an all-round defence card, fending off tanks and swarms alike.

By understanding these cards’ roles and how they interact, you can create a balanced deck that is capable of handling any situation in Clash Royale. One successful strategy you can adopt is by combining tanks with Damage Dealers and supporting them with spells and swarm units with a clear win condition.
