Switch it up with lesson modes on Duolingo

Learning a new language is like embarking on an adventure, with new conversations to discover as you go along. It's always easier to stay on track when you keep things fresh, and Duolingo has got you covered with engaging lessons and so much more.

With a range of learning modes, you can improve your writing and conversational skills with different types of lessons throughout your course. The further you get along your learning journey, the more lesson modes you’ll be able to unlock. Different symbols represent different lesson modes, so be sure to look out for these special icons.

Dive into Story lessons by looking for the book icon on your home tab. These engaging stories feature fun and quirky characters using the language in real-life scenarios. As the story unfolds, you’ll learn along the way with questions that let you tap what you hear, choose the best response, or use context clues to select the most-fitting answer.

Lessons on your home tab marked with a headphone icon represent radio lessons. Tap one to test your listening skills and comprehension of the language while spoken. Each one contains a short lesson with audio snippets and interactive questions to test your understanding. If you missed the previous section or you’d just like to hear it again, just tap the rewind icon.

Tip: You can find Stories and Radio episodes that you’ve unlocked by tapping the dumbbell icon in the navigation bar.

Learning isn’t all about getting everything perfect - it’s about growth. It always helps to review trickier lessons and get them right.
