Been using Duo for the past couple of years, and thoroughly enjoying it. Recent changes, however -- most notably the removal of the ability to *practice* without the stakes of losing hearts -- are so clearly geared to forcing users into a subscription model at the expense of learners who cannot afford to. For an app touted as the best free language learning software, this is an intensely anti-learner change. My engagement with the app has plummeted.

Eight years ago, this app helped me learn the basics in German, Spanish, and Japanese. I can't give more than 2 stars to this app anymore because of the several new frustrating "features" that have surfaced recently. It is very frustrating to learn a language on duolingo now thanks to the removal of practicing to earn hearts and not being able to stay in a league, only being promoted to the next or demoted to the previous. A 500-character review can't express enough of my disappointment.

Everyone knows this is a language learning app, but I really enjoy the mathematical portion. Its great for keeping my mind sharp and easy to use. While it is a free program I understand that ads are a necessary evil for that but the sheer number of ads from duo to upgrade to their premium format is rediculus. It's a long ad that cannot be skipped that appears after every challenge. I almost hate using this app due to this one, for lack of a better term, feature
