Here's how Eggs work in Pokémon Go

Catching Pokémon in Pokémon Go isn't always about throwing Poké Balls at wild Pokémon. Sometimes you have to battle them in a Raid, and other times, you'll have to hatch them straight from the egg.
This guide will tell you all there is to know about Eggs in Pokémon Go, from how they work to how you can pick some up and hatch them for yourself. Who knows, your next most powerful Pokémon may be one you raise from scratch yourself, so read on to find out more about Pokémon Go's egg-cellent eggs.

Eggs in Pokémon Go

The egg system in Pokémon Go is really simple to understand. You can get eggs from PokéStops, Gyms, Adventure rewards, etc., and hatch them by walking around as you play the game. You can have up to a dozen eggs in your inventory at one time, and if you have enough ways to hatch them, you could, in theory, activate them all at once.
Eggs offer another avenue to catch Pokémon, in fact some Pokémon can only be found through hatching. Remember to keep at least one egg in an incubator at all times to succeed at hatching. Be sure to check its progress from time to time.

Where do you get eggs?

Eggs come from two main sources: PokéStop/Gym spins and gifts. PokéStop & Gym spins will randomly assign you an egg after you spin the disc, while weekly Adventure rewards and gifts will fill an empty slot in your egg inventory with a specific type.
Challenging Team GO Rocket leaders will eventually net you the strongest type of egg in the game: the 12 km egg. These eggs hold some of the most powerful Pokémon available in the game, so if you can stand up to Team GO Rocket, you can earn some heavy-duty Pokémon eggs.

How do they hatch?

In order to hatch an egg in Pokémon Go, first you must assign an Incubator to one of the Eggs in your inventory. You can purchase Incubators with PokéCoins via the in-game Shop or earn them as rewards in quests or events. From there, you must walk the required distance with the Egg in the Incubator in order for the eggs to hatch and for your new Pokémon to appear.
There are three different types of Egg Incubators: Infinite Incubators can be used infinitely and can’t be bought, Limited Incubators are destroyed after three uses, while Super Incubators hatch the egg much quicker. Combine a Super Incubator with an event where Eggs are important, and you'll get an even bigger discount on the distance needed.

Egg types in Pokémon Go

Each egg has a different color associated with it. Some have green spots, others yellow spots, and so on. Those colors indicate how long you have to walk in order to hatch the egg, and the more you have to walk, the more powerful the Pokémon within will be. The Pokémon inside change every few months, so hatch as much as you can to see what sort of powerful Pokémon you can find.
Egg types
  • 2 km Eggs - These eggs have green spots, and they take the least amount of time and distance to hatch. Get them by spinning photodiscs on top of Gyms and PokéStops.
  • 5 km Eggs - These eggs have yellow spots, and they stand in the middle of the pack for standard Eggs in terms of how long they take to hatch. You can get these from Gyms/PokéStops or as 25 km weekly Adventure Sync rewards.
  • 7 km Eggs - These yellow eggs with pink polka dots come from Gifts from in-game friends, and they'll take slightly longer than a yellow-spotted egg to hatch.
  • 10 km Eggs - These eggs are indicated by their purple spots, and they take a very long time and distance to hatch. They are available at Gyms/PokéStops or as 50 km weekly Adventure Sync rewards.
  • 12 km Eggs - Also called Strange Eggs, these have red spots, and take the longest amount of walking to hatch. Acquire them by defeating Team GO Rocket leaders in battle.
