Meet the founder: Kate Anthony

As founder and CEO of Euphoria.LGBT, Inc., Katherine Anthony builds apps for the transgender community. She started Solace to provide guidance for gender transition; Windfall to support trans markets and artists; and Bliss to help individuals save money to support their transition. We spoke with the entrepreneur about her trans experience, personal journey, and how she believes diversity in tech can help the trans community.

Play: What inspired you to create Solace?
Katherine Anthony: I had a difficult transition, and I was frustrated by the lack of guidance and information at the time. It felt unfair that I, or anyone like me, would have to find some support group by chance to trade anecdotal medical and legal advice for the most consequential process of my life. I knew there needed to be a tool to help, so I built it.
What’s one thing you’d like people to understand about the transgender experience?
There is a biological basis as to why people like me exist. We’re not just waking up and “deciding” to be transgender. It doesn’t work like that. We are literally born like this. You can observe that by looking at our genes, our brains under a fractional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and countless other characteristics that reinforce this is an inherent characteristic. Transgender people exist everywhere, because nature has determined that we will. And they deserve love, kindness, and compassion – just like anyone else.
What does this year's Play Pride theme of “together with Pride” mean to you?
The LGBT community has a long history of banding together to achieve progress. We’ve found ourselves on yet another battleground – this time for the rights of transgender individuals – in the long struggle toward full equality. We are most successful in making gains when we work together, and given the formidable challenges we face, we need everyone we can find.
What does Solace have in store for Pride this year?
This year Solace is going to help more folks get to Pride. Whether it's souls in the cities or the rural, Solace will do everything she can to help people celebrate and attend the month. Virtual, in-person, or otherwise, Solace believes that everyone should get a chance to celebrate Pride this year.
Is there another app designed with the LGBTQ+ community in mind that you’d like to recommend?
Feeld is the first dating app I’ve used that understands the challenges of dating as a trans woman and has created a beautiful experience that ensures safety and dignity.
