Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

Want more of Garden Heights? Catch Maverick and Seven’s story in Concrete Rose, ngie Thomas's powerful prequel to The Hate U Give.

I read this book last year and now i'm looking forward to reading it again over and over. This book brings in real life problems that happen in black communities and helps play a role in black lives matter. I read the book before watching the movie and tbh the movie sucked. all though the second time i watched the movie it was better, but i think it sucks, because the book covered so much more. The book is also a fast read. highly recommended for teens and young adults, all though there are some very sensitive topics to handle for young teens and some people who may have gone through this.

I read the book, "The Hate U Give." It is an extraordinary book overall it's just absolutely phenomenal litture and the writing is fantastic and with the meaningful real life situation we still face with racism and equality. It shows firm and radical progression to the black communities and the protests for equality and peace, it's truly something that you can take part with and I hope you would. This is a real world situation that's been going for many years and it's still overall going: love.

This audiobook is simply extraordinary! The narrator, Bahni Turpin, brings life to the characters in such an incredible, raw, and realistic manner. This book is important in today's society as it showcases firsthand some of the issues that the African American community is dealing with. Furthermore, it is honestly just a wonderful book with a compelling storyline that I personally think everyone should read (or listen to)! I would highly recommend this riveting read.
