Elle est parue pour la première fois dans la revue britannique Strand Magazine en février 1892, avant d'être regroupée avec d'autres nouvelles dans le recueil Les Aventures de Sherlock Holmes (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes). À l'aube d'un matin d'avril 1883, Watson est réveillé par Holmes qui attend une nouvelle cliente. Arrivant dans le salon du 221B Baker Street, les deux hommes y rencontrent la jeune Helen Stoner, venue consulter Sherlock Holmes à propos d'évènements étranges survenus à Stoke Moran, le manoir de son beau-père (Grimesby Roylott) où elle-même réside.
