Ellen Wood’s sensation novel of 1861 found immediate popularity on its first publication. Lady Isabel Carlyle leaves her husband and children for the aristocratic Francis Levison who, as it turns out, has no intention of marrying her. Having been disfigured in a train accident, the unrecognisable Isabel then takes up the position of governess to her own children in the Carlyle household, with tragic consequences.

Rachel Atkins trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Her

recent theatre credits include Romeo and Juliet at Home and The Country

Girls at Chichester. She has appeared on television many times, most recently

in Chernobyl (HBO/Sky), Humans (AMC/Channel 4) and The Rook (Starz). She

has recorded hundreds of radio dramas and comedies for the BBC and has

been in The Archers. She has recorded many audiobooks.
