Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Canadian author of the popular Anne of Green Gables series, introduces us to an endearing new heroine in Emily of New Moon. Like Anne Shirley, Emily Starr is a quick-witted and imaginative orphan who is sent to live with her two maiden aunts at New Moon Farm after her father dies. Though initially disheartened by her strict and conventional Aunt Elizabeth, Emily slowly grows to love her new family and New Moon Farm.
There she makes friends with Ilse Burnley, a tomboy with a blazing temper; quiet, artistic Teddy Kent; and Perry Miller, the hired boy, who Aunt Elizabeth looks down upon because he was born in the impoverished “Stovepipe Town.”
Montgomery considered Emily to be a character much closer to her personality than Anne, and some of the events which occur in the Emily series happened to Montgomery herself. Emily is described as having black hair, purply violet eyes, elfin ears, pale skin, and a unique and enchanting “slow” smile.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and raised by her maternal grandparents. She attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, where she completed the two-year teaching-certificate program in one year, and went on to study literature at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She returned to live with her grandmother on Prince Edward Island, which became the basis for her “Anne” books. The publication of Anne of Green Gables in 1908 brought her overnight success.
Dave Carley is a leading Canadian playwright and radio dramatist whose works have been produced across Canada and the United States, as well as many countries around the world. His drama Orchidelirium premiered at Toronto’s Factory Theatre in 2004 and received three Dora Award nominations, including one for best new play. Carley has been playwright-in-residence at the Stratford Festival, Massachusetts’ Barrington Stage Company, the Shaw Festival, and the London Public Library. Most recently at CBC Radio Arts and Entertainment in Toronto, Carley was script editor, series editor, and dramaturge for various nationally syndicated radio drama programs, including Morningside Drama, Sunday Showcase, and Monday Night Playhouse. At the New York International Radio Festival, his radio drama Test Drive won a bronze medal, with Big Box winning gold.
Megan Follows is a Canadian actress who comes from a showbiz family. She has done many commercials and has appeared theatrical productions of Romeo and Juliet, Seven Lears: The Pursuit of the Good, and others. She has won two Gemini Awards for her work.
