About this audiobook

A high-flying YA anthology featuring thirteen short stories that turn superhero tropes on their head and offer fresh perspectives on modern myths

Triumph. Tragedy. The empyreal. The infernal. Even the mundane, filtered through the fantastical. Superheroes are, appropriately enough, a sort of super-genre, encompassing all other story types.

This YA anthology features thirteen short stories that creatively turn superhero tropes on their head, while still paying homage to the genre that has found fans for more than eight decades. And there will be no mistake—superheroes don’t have to just be generic handsome white dudes. Everyone in the world, no matter their race, sexual preference, pronouns, or level of ability, has dreamed of flying.

Contributors include six New York Times bestselling authors, seven multiple award winners, a founder of We Need Diverse Books, and at least one author with millions of books in print in the US alone. The collection is edited by New York Times bestselling author Barry Lyga. The full list of contributors includes: Barry Lyga, Paul Levitz, Sarah MacLean, Lamar Giles, Elizabeth Eulberg, Danielle Paige, Varian Johnson, Joseph Bruchac, Morgan Baden, Matthew Phillion, Anna-Marie McLemore, Sterling Gates, and Axie Oh.

About the author

Barry Lyga has written a metric ton of books over fifteen years. He’s an award winner, a New York Times bestseller, a “YA rebel author” (thanks, Kirkus!), and a guy whose entire life has been spent reading, writing, studying, selling, buying, and otherwise being involved in superheroes. He can name every member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, their birth names, and their planets of origin. (Yes, he was very popular in high school.)

Sarah Naughton is an Audie Award–nominated narrator who has recorded titles in a variety of genres, including young adult, mystery, and thriller. Also a renowned actress, singer, and dancer, she is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

Mark Sanderlin is a talented voiceover artist who has worked on numerous audiobook projects.

Ron Butler is a Los Angeles based actor who works regularly as a commercial and animation voiceover artist and an audiobook narrator. A member of the Atlantic Theater Company, he has over a hundred film and television credits to his name and won an Independent Filmmaker Project Award for his work in the HBO film Everyday People.

James Anderson Foster is an audiobook narrator who has been nominated for three Voice Arts Awards for best audiobook narration in the categories of science-fiction, fantasy, and mystery. He has been praised for his conversational delivery and ability to sound exactly like the voice you were imagining in your head. Born and raised on the west coast, he has lived in the Midwest for over a decade but still considers Oregon home.

Jennifer Aquino is an American actor based in Los Angeles. She works in film, television, theater, and voice-over. She's known as the doctor who killed McDreamy on the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy. Her theater background includes performances at East West Players, The Actors' Gang, LaJolla Playhouse, Theatre West, El Portal Theatre, Center Stage Theatre, Victory Theatre, and Lodestone Theatre. Her voice has been described as "grounded," "youthful," "refreshing," and "pleasing to the ear." Jennifer loves giving voice to young adults, and reading journeys of empowered women in romantic comedies, LitRPG books, fantasy/sci-fi novels, mysteries, and thrillers. Her background in theater and voice contributes to her narration in giving each character a unique life.

Tim Campbell is an experienced audiobook narrator and actor who has recorded over 160 audiobooks from almost every genre. Equally comfortable reading as an American or a Brit, he has a background in history and philosophy as well as a versatility with accents and dialects. A classically trained singer, he performs regularly with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Ariana Delawari, an Earphones Award–winning narrator, is a musician, director, and actress. A graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, she directed We Came Home, an award-winning documentary about her journeys to Afghanistan since 9/11, the making of her album “Lion of Panjshir,” and her family story. She recently became the first female of Afghan descent to perform rock music live in Afghanistan in over thirty years. She is also a member of the LA Ladies Choir and was recently a speaker and performer at the inaugural TEDx Kabul.

Frankie Corzo is an experienced narrator and actress who spent her childhood performing in theater productions, commercials, films, and voiceovers. Born to Cuban immigrant parents, she narrates and acts in both Spanish and English. Her work has been added to numerous best of lists, including Audible's for 2017 and 2018. Born and raised in New Jersey, she currently splits her time between New York and Los Angeles.

Eunice Wong is a Juilliard-trained, award-winning actor and narrator. She's recorded for Penguin Random House, Audible, Tantor, Harper, and others, and performed professionally across the US. Director Paul Ruben calls her "an exceptionally talented, intuitive actress & storyteller [who] connects the listener to every emotional nuance in the author's words." Born in Toronto, with parents from Hong Kong, she's "audiobook-fluent" in Cantonese, French, and Mandarin. She's always open to books that aren't ethnically specific. (Her Canadian accent was poonded oot of her at Juilliard, but still available on request.) She's taught poetry in a men's super-max prison, lived in Kyrgyzstan with nomads, and swum with stingrays. Eunice lives in Princeton, New Jersey, with her family and two lazy greyhounds.

Emily Lawrence is a passionate actor, voiceover artist, and writer. The narrator of almost 200 audiobooks, she has also worked in television, film, and theater. Born and raised in New York, she received her bachelor’s degree in drama from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. While her greatest loves are narrating and acting, her other passions include traveling, aerial circus, and chocolate.
