Hung Lou Meng or The the Dream of the Red Chamber, or The Story of the Stone (Shitou Ji) is a classic Chinese novel composed by Cao Xueqin in the middle of the 18th century. It is a masterpiece of Chinese literature, known for its psychological scope, and its observation of the world view, aesthetics, life-styles, and social relations of 18th-century China.
For more than a century and a half, The Dream of the Red Chamber has been recognized in China as the greatest of its novels, a Chinese Romeo-and-Juliet love story and a portrait of one of the world's great civilizations.

Cáo Xuěqín (1715 or 1724 – 1763 or 1764) was a Chinese writer during the Qing dynasty. He is best known as the author of Hung Lou Meng, or The Dream of the Red Chamber, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. His given name was Cáo Zhān and his courtesy name was Mèngruǎn.
