About this audiobook

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER – OVER 3 MILLION COPIES SOLD

Do you ever suspect that everyone else has life figured out and you don’t have a clue? If so, Rachel Hollis has something to tell you: that’s a lie.

If you have ever said any of these things to yourself . . .

  • Something else will make me happy.
  • I’m not a good mom.
  • I will never get past this.
  • I am defined by my weight.
  • I should be further along by now.

. . . then you could benefit from the unflinching faith and rock-hard tenacity Rachel Hollis has in store for you. In this challenging but conversational book, Rachel exposes the twenty lies and misconceptions that too often hold us back from living joyfully and productively, lies we’ve told ourselves so often we don’t even hear them anymore.

Rachel is real and talks about real issues. More than that, she reveals the specific practical strategies that helped her move past them. In the process, she encourages, entertains, and even kicks a little butt, all to convince you to do whatever it takes to get real and become the joyous, confident woman you were meant to be. Because you really can live with passion and hustle – and give yourself grace without giving up.

I tried to listen to the audiobook, but couldn't finish. She strikes me as a person that knows how to say the right things, but doesn't feel them. The result of her thrown in "girl" & "ya'll" added to the general sense that she was being disingenuous & felt like forced sisterhood. It was clear to me that she came from a place of privilege and has never had a real, horrible, debilitating emergency happen to her. It's written to a certain audience: type A's with a preexisting large sense of worth.

spoiled girl tries to pretend she's like the rest of us. Each chapter starts with an inspirational poster worthy sentiment and ends with how blessed she is. "once, I was a virgin, and this guy took my flower, and then was mean, but then I told him to stop it, and now he's the best husband ever" "once to we got to go travel Europe and it was really romantic, but then my emotions made my face ugly, but I still had fun" "once I wanted to get pregnant, but it took more than one try, and I was sad, but now I have 3 great kids" it always seems to come back around to how she has everything, and that if you don't, then it's your fault... but so much of it is luck that got her where she is. she even admits one if her biggest successes was accidental. bunch of poppycock.

im not sure what audience this book wanted to cater to, but i guess im not it? the forced girl-talk narrative was exhauasting and the message itself oozes white privilege. i heard a lot of good hype and was hoping to be inspired to look at personal bad habits to pursue personal goals and inner joy. in the end, i had the usual girl-of-color perspective of resentment at how easy it is for white girls to succeed and call it the only way to work hard.
