Usamriid went into a state of Delta Alert on September 11 and activated its emergency response teams when the first anthrax letters were opened in New York and Washington, D.C. Preston reports, in unprecedented detail, on the government’ s response to the attacks and takes us into the ongoing FBI investigation. His story is based on interviews with top-level FBI agents and with Dr. Steven Hatfill.

Jahrling is leading a team of scientists doing controversial experiments with live smallpox virus at CDC. Preston takes us into the lab where Jahrling is reawakening smallpox and explains, with cool and devastating precision, what may be at stake if his last bold experiment fails.

Had to stop driving to listen I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love Richard Preston and thought The Hot Zone was his best until I heard this. The way he goes about telling what happened and then explains evrrything worked out perfectly for me. I have some experience with thr medical field but not enough to understand viruses and bacterias atbthis level and this book I totally understand because of how he told the story. The people that stopped SmallPox deserve lifetime awards whatever they want

I love this book so much. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's terrifying and delightful. I could not recommend this book more to anyone studying medicine or wanting to become a scientist.

I love Richard Preston's storytelling style very informative and entertaining as well.

Richard Preston is the bestselling author of The Hot Zone, The Demon in the Freezer, The Wild Trees, and the novel The Cobra Event. A writer for The New Yorker since 1985, Preston is the only nondoctor to have received the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Champion of Prevention Award. He also holds an award from the American Institute of Physics. Preston lives outside of New York City.
