When Michael K. Williams died on September 6, 2021, he left behind a career as one of the most electrifying actors of his generation. From his star turn as Omar Little in The Wire to Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire to Emmy-nominated roles in HBO’s The Night Of and Lovecraft Country, Williams inhabited a slew of indelible roles that he portrayed with a rawness and vulnerability that leapt off the screen. Michael K. Williams was an Emmy-nominated actor and producer. One of his generation's most respected and acclaimed talents, Williams was best known for his roles on The Wire and Boardwalk Empire. He died in his native Brooklyn, New York, on September 6, 2021.

Jon Sternfeld is a former editor, the author of Unprepared: America in the Time of Coronavirus, and the co-author of Crisis Point, with Sen. Tom Daschle and Sen. Trent Lott, A Stone of Hope, with Jim St. Germain, and A Forever Family with Rob Scheer, among other non-fiction books. He lives in New York.
