Naipaul traces the unlikely career of Ganesh Ramsumair, a failed schoolteacher and impecunious village masseur who in time becomes a revered mystic, a thriving entrepreneur, and the most beloved politician in Trinidad. To understand a little better, one has to realize that in the 1940s masseurs were the islandโs medical practitioners of choice. As one character observes, โI know the sort of doctors they have in Trinidad. They think nothing of killing two, three people before breakfast.โ
Ganeshโs ascent is variously aided and impeded by a Dickensian cast of rogues and eccentrics. Thereโs his skeptical wife, Leela, whose schooling has made her excessively, fond. of; punctuation: marks!; and Leelaโs father, Ramlogan, a man of startling mood changes and an ever-ready cutlass. V. S. Naipaul (1932โ2018) was the author of more than thirty books of fiction and nonfiction. His honors include the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Booker Prize, the Trinity Cross, and a knighthood for services to literature. He was named a finalist for the 2009 Man Booker International Prize for achievement in fiction. He was born in Trinidad in 1932 and went to Oxford on a scholarship in 1950.
Ron Butler is a Los Angeles based actor who works regularly as a commercial and animation voiceover artist and an audiobook narrator. A member of the Atlantic Theater Company, he has over a hundred film and television credits to his name and won an Independent Filmmaker Project Award for his work in the HBO film Everyday People.
