Wolfgang Schmitt and his friend Billy Köster from the freighter the Pfalz, are captured in Melbourne three hours after Britain declares war on Germany, and find themselves packed off to a derelict gaol in the rundown village of Berrima. Through the ups and downs, the moonshiners keep turning their jam rations into booze while others smuggle whisky over the prison wall at night. As the war progresses hatred rises, but in a two-mile spot radiating from the jail, Australians, Germans, and guards forget they are enemies. Together they rescue a horse from a cistern, save the village from bushfires, and grow giant tomatoes. One of the few positive stories of the First World War. The Berrima POW Camp gives new meaning to the term the Great War and is a badge of honor on Australia’s sleeve.

Wendy Hamilton is a New Zealander who moved to Australia in 2014. For seven years she lived near Berrima and often wandered around the quaint village and along the riverbank where the German internees spent much of their time. Nowadays, Wendy and her husband, Ian, live close to the Snowy Mountains. She spends her days writing and illustrating. Wendy is a diverse writer. This is her second historical book. Her other works include books on home-schooling, parenting, life in New Zealand, children’s novels, and picture books.
