Vasily Grossman (1905-1964) worked as a reporter for the army newspaper Red Star during World War II. His vivid yet sober The Hell of Treblinka was translated and used as testimony in the Nuremberg trials. His work includes the novel Life and Fate and The Road, a collection of stories, journalism, and essays.
Leighton Pugh trained at LAMDA, after studying modern languages at Queen's College, Oxford. His radio work includes the plays Murder by the Book and Scenes from Provincial Life for BBC Radio 4 and the voice of Heinrich von Kleist in the BBC Radio 3 documentary The Tragical Adventure of Heinrich von Kleist.
Robert Chandler has translated many NYRB Classics, including Vasily Grossman's Life and Fate, as well as Soul and The Foundation Pit by Andrey Platanov. He lives in London.
