This is my favorite in the series so far. I was pulled in from the start and did not want to put the book down. The mystery is has a multitude of twists and turns to keep the reader entertained and guessing who the murderer is. I love Hawke's character. He is a strong protagonist, but the recurring secondary characters are just as strong and necessary to the storyline. Since Hawke's usually prefers to work alone with his animal companions, it was nice to see how he handled having a partner. Especially a partner that he didn't want. This made for some entertaining scenes. I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator, Larry Gorman, is great. Mr. Gorman does a fantastic job of bringing Hawke and the other characters to life. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.

loved the narration of Larry Gorman State Trooper Hawke is pulled out of a conference to track an escaped convict. Worse yet he has been partnered with another tracker. When the other tracker ends up dead, Hawke is more determined than ever to bring the person responsible to justice. We have plenty of twists to the plot, a great murder mystery, and a bit of romance.

law-enforcement, action, thriller***** While at a seminar he'd rather miss, Fish and Wildlife Oregon State Trooper Gabriel Hawke gets tagged to go on a hunt for an escaped villain through difficult terrain while partnered with a classic blowhard who is more hindrance than anything else. Hawke is the kind of man often described as laconic as in the Gary Cooper of old movies style and with a talent for tracking and for naming his working animals very simply. All of the characters are spot on real and the imagery of the region is often breathtaking. The plot is tight and suspenseful. I really enjoyed it! Larry Gorman (narrator) gives a good performance in the sense that I felt that he WAS Trooper Hawke! I won this book in a giveaway. Yay me!
