Swami Vivekananda proclaimed "each soul is potentially Divine. The goal is to manifest this Divinity within, by controlling Nature – external and internal. Do it either by work or worship, psychic control or philosophy; by one or more, or all of these and be free.' The systematic methodology of unfoldment of this inner potential Divinity, by moving towards Self-perfection is referred to as Yoga by Sri Aurobindo. Yoga is thus a process by which the Animal-man ascends through the stages Man-man, Super-man and the Divine-man.
Our prayers from Padavali which are mainly taken from the Vedic literature are not just for asking something from Ishwara but are for moulding oneself on the vision of Oneness. The Sadhak sings these prayers for developing the right mind and attitude so as to be able to see everything as Ishwara and contribute in Ishwara’s work. Thus if the chanting of prayers is accompanied with deep contemplation on the meaning then it could be very elevating. We hope this small booklet would be useful not only for the participants coming for the various camps of Vivekananda Kendra but also for other aspirants too.
This makes Yoga much more relevant today. There is a compelling need to create an awareness about “Yoga” which is commonly misconstrued as a mere Physical exercise.
Yoga is not just Asana or Pranayama. It is a way of life. It is a process in which we integrate our body-mind-intellect with the larger identites like family, society and Nation the entire creation.
We hope that this book “Yoga-the Way of Life based on the vision of oneness” will enable the reader to get a clear and proper understanding about the Philosophy and Practice of Yoga.
