Постоянный мотив ее тот, что «среда заедает человека». Мотив хороший и очень сильный; но им до сих пор не умели еще у нас хорошо воспользоваться. Человек, «заеденный средою», изображался иногда в повестях тургеневской школы довольно живо; но самая «среда» и ее отношение к человеку рисовались бледно и слабо...»
