В повести рассказывается о судьбе Василия Семеновича Пыжикова – командира партизанской бригады «Старик», предпринявшего осенью 1942 г. попытку объединить в дивизию отряды северо-восточной части Минской области. Его несанкционированная партийным руководством деятельность привела к длительному конфликту с Пантелеймоном Пономаренко. Конфликт завершился лишь в мае 1943 года, после роспуска дивизии (декабрь 1942), расформирования бригады «Старик» (май 1943) и ареста Василия Пыжикова (1 мая 1943 года)
