Отдельные части романа были опубликованы в "Отечественных записках" в 1839, а полностью "Герой нашего времени" был издан в 1840 году. В 1841 году вышло в свет второе издание романа с предисловием Лермонтова, заключительная часть которого посвящена авторской оценке главного героя — Печорина.
