Впервые напечатано в «Самарской газете», 1895, номер 235, 1 ноября, с подзаголовком «Силуэт».В конце 90-х и начале 900-х годов М.Горький дважды правил гранки первого набора, по-видимому, предполагая вторичное издание рассказа. Но замысел этот осуществлён не был.В собрания сочинений рассказ не включался.Печатается по тексту «Самарской газеты» с исправлениями, внесёнными М.Горьким в гранки набора: снят подзаголовок, сделан ряд стилистических поправок.
