"Письма русского путешественника" - плод пребывания Карамзина за границею, куда он отправился двадцатитрехлетним молодым человеком (в 1789 г.) и где пробыл полтора года. Он писал их в Москву к своим близким друзьям Плещеевым, а впоследствии они появились в печати, в издававшемся Карамзиным "Московском Журнале" (1791 и 1792 гг.)
