Цикл статей о народной поэзии примыкает к работе «Россия до Петра Великого», в которой, кратко обозревая весь исторический путь России, Белинский утверждал, что залог ее дальнейшего прогресса заключается в смене допетровской «народности» («чего-то неподвижного, раз навсегда установившегося, не идущего вперед») привнесенной Петром I «национальностью» («не только тем, что было и есть, но что будет или может быть»). Тем самым предопределено превосходство стихотворения Пушкина – «произведения национального» – над песней Кирши Данилова – «произведением народным».
