عليهم في كتابه " تهافت الفلاسفة " بما اعتبر ضربة قاصمة لهم، ثم جاء ابن رشد بعده بزمن وصنف كتابه هذا ليناقش الغزالي في مسائل بدع الغزالي بها الفلاسفة وأخرى كفرهم بها، وجاء رده بادعاء أن الغزالي أخطأ فهم كلام الفلاسفة فنسب إليهم ما لم يقولوه، أو انه اقتصر على كلام ابن سينا والفارابي دون سواهما، أو أنه فهم قولهم ولكن اخطا في حكمه عليهم . وجاء الكتاب على طريقة الفلاسفة ومصطلحات المناطقة، ولا يخفى تحامل ابن رشد على الغزالي الجبل الراسخ والبحر الزاخر، في وصفه بنحو السفسطة، والغمز منه بنحو القصور ونفي الأهلية، وعلى كل فهو نموذج من المناقشات الثقيلة التي مرت في تاريخنا وحفظت في تراثنا
