يقدم هذا الكتاب دراسة حول العقل والوجود؛ فلمّا كانت المعرفة الإنسانية تتألف من مدركات تمثل الأجسام، أيْ مظاهرها المحسوسة مكتسبة بالحواس الظاهرة ومختزلة في المخيلة، ومن مدركات مجردة عن كل عرض محسوس ومكتسبة بما يسمى بالعقل، وكان الفلاسفة متفقين إجمالا على أن المعرفة العقلية -على تضاربهم في طبيعتها وقيمتها- أعلى من المعرفة الحسية وحاكمة عليها؛ انتهت مسألة المعرفة إلى أن تكون مسألة العقل، وتقع الدراسة في ثلاثة أبواب: (وجود العقل، نقد العقل، والمعاني والمبادئ الأولى).
