حياة قلم العقاد فذة عظيمة بلا ريب فهي ليست كحياة أي كاتب أو أديب في عصره، فقد كان عصاميًّا في نشأته وجهاده وقد كان في كل ما حصله من علوم وفلسفة وآداب أستاذ نفسه وولي أمرها ومدرسة فكرية جامعة ومكتبة نفيسة بالاطلاع الواسع، فكتب عدة فصول عن الجانب الاجتماعي والسياسي من حياته، بدأها بولادة هذا القلم في أسوان وتحدث عن ظروف ولادته وعن الجيل الذي ولد فيه مقارنًا بين قلمه وقلم عبد الله النديم، متحدثا عن الصحافة وعن موزعي الجرائد وفي مقدمتهم المعلم «عكريشة» وعن أحاديثه مع الساسة من الوزراء وغيرهم وما وقع فيه من أزمات وكيف اشتغل بالصحافة في الحرب العالمية الأولى وكيف انقطع عنها وعودته إليها مرة أخرى، وتعد هذه الفصول أو المذكرات بلا شك جزءًا من تاريخ مصر.
