يقدم هذا الكتاب ديوان الإمام الشافعي؛ كان الشعر العربي قد طرأت عليه تغيرات جوهرية عندما بدأ الشافعي بممارسة هذا الفن في أواخر القرن الثامن الميلادي، وذلك بسبب التغيرات الاجتماعية والتاريخية التي حتمها ذلك العصر نفسه، ولعل أول تغيّر يتصل بالجانب الاجتماعي في تلك الآونة أن يكون تمركز الشعر في المدن بدلا من البوادي التي كان ينتشر فيها خلال العصر الأموي وما سبقه من عصور.
