تعد هذه الرواية ``شحاذون ومعتزون`` من أكثر روايات ألبير قصيري شهرة، ربما نتيجة تحويلها إلى فيلم سينمائي بعنوان ``شحاذون ونبلاء`` 1991م، والشخصية المحورية في الرواية هو ``جوهر`` الأستاذ الجامعي الذي يُدرّس الفلسفة في الجامعة، وترك هذه الوظيفة؛ ليعمل مُحاسبا في بيت من بيوت الدعارة، حيث تتوفر له الأموال التي تساعده على تعاطي الحشيش ويعيش في عالم يراه بعيدا عن فساد المجتمع البرجوازي الذي لم يؤمن به وبأخلاقياته، ويشير هذا الأمر إلى فلسفة الرفض، والثورة على كل ما هو ثابت، والسخرية من العالم، والانحياز التام للفقراء والمُشردين والمتسولين والمنبوذين والهامشيين والغارقين في تدخين الحشيش والمدمنين.
