لا شك في أن يوم 11 يولية عام 1882 كان من أحلك الأيام التى مرت على مدينة الإسكندرية ، بل على الأمة المصرية كلها فهو اليوم الذى أطلق الأسطول البريطانى فيه قذائفة على تلك المدينة الهادئة الوادعة ، فكان العابر للطريق بها بعد ذلك اليوم الحالك السواد ، يمر بأحيائها المختلفة العامرة فلا يقع ناظره إلا على الأطلال والأنقاض ، ولا تقع عينه على بيت قائم بين عشرات البيوت المتداعبة أو التى هدمتها طلقات المدافع البريطانية الغاشمة بلا هوادة أو رحمة.
