الفيل من الحيوانات التى كرمها الله –عز وجل- و ذكرها فى كتابه الكريم فى سورة تسمى باسمى هى "سورة الفيل" و تحكى السورة قصة عظيمة حدثت للفيلة فى العام الذى ولد فيه النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم فعندما رأى أبرهة الحبشى حاكم اليمن أن الناس جميعا يقصدون مكة ليحجوا إلى الكعبة المشرفة اغتاظ بشدة ، وفكر فى أن يصرفهم عن ذلك ، فبنى كنيسة كبيرة فى صنعاء سماها القليس ، وزينها بأعظم الزينات و الزخارف ليحج الناس إليها إلا أنهم ظلوا يحجون إلى الكعبة المشرفة ورفضوا الذهاب إلى كنيسته ، فلما وجد ذلك أقسم أن يهدم الكعبة و يحارب العرب و يقتلهم .
