يوضح هذا الكتاب أن سبع سنوات ونجيب محفوظ ينتظم في ندوة `` كازينو سان ستيفانو`` فأطلق الرواد عليها اسم ندوة نجيب محفوظ ولم تتوقف إلا في عام 1994م حينما تعرض محفوظ للطعن بالسكين، ويجمع هذا الكتاب بين البساطة والتلقائية والعمق، وهو لا يعتمد على السؤال والجواب، وإنما على التعليق والوصف المشاهد والتنقلات عبر حركة الزمن، ويذكر الجمل في كتابه أن نجيب محفوظ كان يشيد بتيار الواقعية السحرية في أمريكا اللاتينية، كما أبدى إعجابه بماركيز في ``خريف البطريك``، وكذلك بنقاد الأدب في الخمسينيات والستينيات، حيث وجد ما يعرف بتيار ``الحركة الأدبية النقدية`` التي كان من رموزها لويس عوض وعبدالقادر القط وشكري عياد وعلي الراعي.
