منذ انبسط ظل الإسلام على الأرض سلك الخلفاءُ والأمراء والوزراء في الصدر الأول والقرون الزاهرة بعده مسلكًا كان فيه الغَناء لجر المغانم إلى الأمة ورفع المغارم عنها، فكانوا يتصفحون بأنفسهم شئون الناس، وينظرون فيما يصلحهم مباشرة، ولذلك كانوا على أوفازٍ أبدًا، يتنقلون في بلادهم، ويجتازون الفيافي والقفار، يهتمون برفع الظُّلامات اهتمامهم بتوسيع الفتوحات، ويُعنون بالماديات والمعنويات عنايتهم باللدنيات والدينيات، يفارقون الأهل والولد، ولا يعلقون براحة، ولا يشغفهم حب بلد، وقد ازدان صدر التاريخ بذكر تلك المفاخر والمآثر، وكان حقًّا على الأخلاف أن يهتدوا بسيرة الأسلاف
