يتعرَّف الراوي على مقهى الكرنك الذي يقع في وسط القاهرة، وسرعان ما تنشأ صداقة بينه وبين قرنفلة صاحبة المقهى والراقصة السابقة، فيصير من روَّاد المقهى الدائمين. ومن خلاله يلتقي بعدد من الشخصيات التي تمثِّل الشباب الجامعي خلال الفترة المشحونة بين حرب الاستنزاف وحرب 1973، حيث يختفون لفترة ويُعاودون الظهور في مقهى الكرنك، فاقدين لحماسهم وطموحاتهم وأحلامهم نتيجة لأخطاء تلك الفترة الدقيقة. نُشرت الرواية عام 1974، وانتقلت لشاشة السينما في فيلم للمخرج علي بدرخان عام 1975.
