ชาวต่างชาติเรียกอาณาจักรอยุธยาว่า "สยาม" เมื่อราว พ.ศ.2000 เดิมประเทศไทยเองก็เคยใช้ชื่อว่า “สยาม ” มาแต่รัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยปรากฏใช้เป็นชื่อประเทศชัดเจนใน พ.ศ. 2399 ทว่าคนไทยไม่เคยเรียกตนเองว่า "สยาม" หรือ "ชาวสยาม" อย่างชาวต่างชาติหรือชื่อประเทศอย่างเป็นทางการในสมัยนั้นเลย ส่วนคำว่า "คนไทย" นั้น จดหมายเหตุลาลูแบร์ ได้บันทึกไว้ชัดเจนว่า ชาวอยุธยาเรียกตนเองเช่นนั้นมานานแล้ว
